But while the hotel experienced something of a renaissance under Glenwood Sherrard’s management, his son, Andrew, could not keep the business afloat. The hotel nearly went bankrupt due to the bad business decisions made by Andrew Sherrard following his father’s death in 1958. Salvation fortunately arrived ten years later when the esteemed Dunfey Hotel Corporation purchased the Parker House from the Sherrards. Under Dunfey, the hotel experienced a thorough series of renovations that both restored its magnificent architecture while also modernizing the available accommodations to maximize their comfort.

Hotelier Harvey Parker was also the first to offer meals continuously throughout the day, rather than at fixed intervals, and the second floor became a popular choice for the dining clubs of the time. 19th century Americans resisted the European plan as an affront to democratic ideals. Today, the American plan exists only on cruise ships and certain inclusive resorts, like Sandals Royal Plantation, Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The Parker House had little culinary competition in Boston, but its great contribution to the nation's menu is its namesake roll.

The "white facade" is darker now than it was in the days of Harvey Parker and the remembered voices of Longfellow, Dickens, and Holmes are nearly inaudible.
The hotel's bake shop is also well-known as the birthplace of Boston Cream Pie, the official Massachusetts state dessert. Parker House chefs also invented the term "scrod," for the fish catch of the day. Well-regarded chefs like Emeril Lagasse, Jasper White and Lydia Shire launched their culinary careers in the Parker's Restaurant kitchen. Our 511 hotel rooms in downtown Boston feature variety of bed types with custom cherry furnishings and modern day conveniences.
Omni Parker House has so much history to share, that it can't all fit on one brochure or web page. Heaven, By Hotel Standards is a delightfully anecdotal and lavishly illustrated new book by author and photographer Susan Wilson that details the rich history of our Boston landmark. In Donna Tartt's 1992 novel The Secret History, the characters stayed at the Parker House, mentioning it was where Dickens had stayed.
Parker's, the stately, full-service restaurant, is as historically significant as the hotel itself. Not only did Ho Chi Minh, Malcolm X, and Emeril Lagasse all work there, but it is where the famed, buttery Parker House rolls were invented. Ditto the Boston cream pies, though the restaurant's contemporary rendering is virtually unrecognizable from the traditional dessert (it more closely resembles a Little Debbie Zebra Cake in looks and taste). The bar has a timeless tavern-like decor, with dark wood floors, a pressed-tin ceiling, and framed silhouette portraits on the wainscoted wood walls. In one corner, round club tables and chairs are clustered in front of a marble fireplace, and in another sits a midnight-blue velvet settee with gold trim.
The business center has two desktop computers and two printers (one a laser-jet printer/scanner/copier). On the lobby level, Morsel's gift shop and newsstand sells T-shirts, mugs, and other souvenirs, and houses a Starbucks coffee counter. Located on the corner of Tremont and School streets, Omni Parker House is in a historic district of Boston, right along the Freedom Trail. The hotel is directly across from King's Chapel, the Old Town Hall (now a Ruth's Chris steakhouse), and a block from Granary Burial Ground, where Paul Revere, Sam Adams, John Hancock, and Mother Goose were laid to rest. The blocks surrounding the hotel are lined with bars, Irish pubs, and restaurants that characterize much of Boston's food scene -- steakhouses and seafood joints. Omni Parker House is just outside Beacon Hill, a historic and wealthy residential neighborhood known for its Federal-style row houses, brick sidewalks, narrow streets, and dozens of antique shops.
